Swedish FAS funds new project on attention capture by alarms in complex settings

Project proposal submitted to the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research has been approved. The project, entitled "Warning! Investigating what auditory alarms affect attention and performance in complex settings" and worth 4 418 000 SEK (456000 Euros), will start at the end of 2012 and run for four years. The work will be carried out in collaboration with Jessica Ljungberg (Umea University, Sweden), Dylan Jones (Cardiff University, UK), Greg Neely (Umea University, Sweden), Anders Agren (Lulea University, Sweden) and Jessica Ljungberg (Umea University, Sweden). The research will seek to help improving auditory alarms by studying factors enhancing the attention capture properties of alarm signals and test them in an aviation-based multi-tasking environment (AMTE, illustrated below), a task I initially developed back in 2003 for a project with Eurocontrol.
